<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - There’s No Such Thing as “Too Sensitive” - We get so busy, all of us, with the tasks and duties and mindlessness of everyday life that we forget what it is to be alive. We forget to really live. And then at the age of forty, fifty, sixty, if we’re lucky, we realize we’ve been missing out and that life is fragile and fleeting and we worry it might be too late to change. So we teach ourselves about meditation, and mindfulness, and living in the present. We try to be more aware, more grateful, more “in the moment”. Until we forget again.</image:title>
<image:caption>But then there are those who have not missed out on as much. Those who seem to daydream too much; who stop to look and notice the beauty in what surrounds them; who feel love and pain so intensely it’s unbearable; who are moved by a song, a flower, a sentiment.</image:caption>

I would imagine most people, big or little, would’ve thought nothing of this, and that wouldn’t be crazy. In that moment, I remember smiling, possibly wondering where the petal had come from, and then moving on very quickly to the</image:caption>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - I’m Highly Sensitive, Stop Worrying About Me — A letter from a highly sensitive child - But World, here’s the thing. There’s nothing wrong with me. I am highly sensitive, and that is not something that needs to be remedied. And please don’t assume that I am weak as a result, because I can assure you I am not. I realize that I don’t behave like many of the children you’ve seen, and I may not meet the expectations so many books have reinforced.</image:title>
<image:caption>I know it would make your life easier if I just went with the flow and did things the “right” way, because then you wouldn’t have to try and understand me; because then, you wouldn’t have to go out of your way to accommodate me and my needs. Because then, you wouldn’t have to worry about me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - How do you tell a sensitive child the truth about the world? - I will never forget they way my husband and I struggled before we knew our son was highly sensitive. Having answers can sometimes make the whole difference. It gives you reassurance and relief, and from there you can move on to more constructive things. But until you know, you spend most of your time and energy wondering, asking, waiting, worrying… And that’s not good for anyone.</image:title>
<image:caption>The session went on for about an hour and a half. Honestly, I could have gone on all night. I could’ve told a hundred stories. I could’ve gone into every little detail that drove us to our wits end when things were bad.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - How do you tell a sensitive child the truth about the world? - My son asked me one day if monsters are real. I explained to him that the monsters we see on TV or read about in books are simply a figment of someone’s imagination, meant to entertain us. He accepted that. But then a few weeks later, on our way back home from a long day at the zoo, he said to me after having given it some thought:</image:title>
<image:caption>“Mom, did you know monsters really do exist? We’re the monsters. We keep cutting down trees and the animals have no place to live.” Yes, at the young age of six, my son figured out on his own that people can be awful and inconsiderate and unreasonable. They can be monsters.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - 10 Tips For Parents of Highly Sensitive Boys - It is true that the high sensitivity trait can be found equally in both males and females, regardless or age, race or culture. And it is true that, because of the heightened sense of awareness that comes with the trait, making it very difficult for the highly sensitive person (or HSP) to filter out all the input from the environment, it is a challenge for both males and females to live carefree, happy lives without getting so overwhelmed with the world. However, because of society’s expectations of men to be a certain way, a way that is more characteristic of the opposite end of the sensitivity spectrum, raising a sensitive boy to be a healthy and happy man can pose a bit more of a challenge.</image:title>

This is obviously true for all children, regardless of whether or not they’re highly sensitive. Nevertheless, I do find the topic especially relevant to highly sensitive children because we generally resort to comparisons when we feel our children stand out in ways we—or others—perceive as negative.Even though we will still sometimes do it secretly, my husband and I have learned through the years that one of the worst things you can do to your child—and yourself as a parent—is to compare your child to other children, or yourself to other parents. <image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - “Suck it up, son. It’s no big deal.” Damaging words we tell our children - Whatever it is, you pick yourself up and keep going. That’s how it is. We don’t question it. We simply try to do what is expected of us. But for those of us who are more sensitive than most, those words can be damaging. For those of us who thoroughly process input (whether we like it or not), who feel much more deeply about the events that occur in our lives, and who require more time to collect ourselves after a difficult time, those words can leave scars that run deep.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - Finding the right children’s books for highly sensitive children - So clearly, books are important in this house. But when one of your children is highly sensitive, choosing the right stories, especially at bedtime, is a challenge I never thought we’d have to deal with. To me, stories like Little Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man and The Ugly Duckling are children’s book essentials. At least, that was before my son made me realize what these stories really were. The first one is about a little girl who is sent off into the woods on her own to visit her grandmother. Her mother clearly knows the woods are dangerous, which is why she warns her daughter not to stop or talk to anyone, but she sends her off anyway.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - Packing for a trip with a Highly Sensitive Child, and other “unnecessarily complicated” activities - When we had our first, people always seemed to assume that we chose to complicate things; that things could be much easier if we weren’t so extreme. They said we overdid and overthought everything, and that that was unnecessary. The worst people told us we were spoiling our child the way we did things. The nicest ones said that our behavior was typical of first-time parents, and that we would see how much more laid back we would be with our second.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - Lessons From a Highly Sensitive Mother: Empty Your Bucket, by guest blogger Amanda van Mulligen - And without this space the rest of the day is a write off. I just wish I had known all this seven years ago, and avoided the feelings of confusion and guilt. Newborns are hard enough for any new mother, but for a highly sensitive mother the trials of early motherhood somehow hit harder. So be kind to yourself. Give yourself breathing space. Look after your own needs too. Make time to empty your bucket. And most of all let go of the guilt.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - This thing we call empathy - And as for our little panda bear, well, my son totally lost interest as soon as we got home. And a few days later when I asked him why he wanted the panda so bad, he said to me that it was his baby brother who wanted the panda. And it doesn’t really matter anyway; my son successfully rescued a panda in need, my toddler has a new friend, and the panda seems to be quite happy in his new home.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - We know our children best - But making false assumptions and driving parents out of their minds doesn’t help anyone. Instead of being so focused on finding something wrong, we should perhaps try and enjoy the wonderful things all of our children have to offer, regardless of what they’re like. I don’t know how I will handle myself the next time I hear something senseless about my child. I know I won’t come out unaffected, but I also know that it won’t break me. I am listening to my child’s life with an open heart. I know him better than anyone does. And I know that he is nothing short of extraordinary. To the mothers and fathers who are going through a rough and confusing time: Listen to your heart before you listen to anyone else. Enjoy your children and everything that they are. Stay strong. You are not alone.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - The never-ending bedtime routine - Sleep deprivation is a killer, I have to say. My husband and I suffered chronic sleep deprivation with our first-born for 3 years, yes, three years, and now with our second for about 10 months. So there was a time when we were so desperate that we tried the cry-it-out sleep training method. We were convinced that we had ruined our son and that it was entirely our fault that he couldn’t sleep on his own or through the night, that we were at it night after night after night, until our baby, less than 12 months old, taught himself how to vomit on cue.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - The never-ending bedtime routine - People always ask us, with the best of intentions, why we do this to ourselves. It hurts me every time I hear it and I am sick of trying to explain our situation. But I do understand that those whose children sleep quickly and with little fuss can’t possibly fathom why it would take us an hour and half to two hours and a half to get our child to sleep, let alone those with no children at all.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - Expectations from a Highly Sensitive Child - As we walked in I told Luca that we should say hello to his new teacher, who was sitting in the ‘quiet corner’ of the class with another little boy whose face was red after a seemingly difficult and tearful drop-off. Seeing yet another child so upset about the first day of school, I thought that Luca’s breakdown would come any minute. But to my surprise, despite all the sad faces in the room and our relatively long goodbye, Luca just made his way to the play area after giving me a kiss. And that was that.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - A Highly Sensitive Child dealing with a new baby - So all things considered, one might say that the situation is not all that bad, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that the day will come when my two boys will put their differences aside and learn to get along. I don’t know how long it will take, but at least I know that when it really matters, Luca has shown his love and affection for the baby. And maybe that’s why I couldn’t find my answers online. Maybe there is no tailored advice for those who are highly sensitive. Maybe it really is just a matter of time.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - The fear of Santa Claus - For a few days after that I was really sad about what we had done. I felt bad about the fact that we started the whole Santa deal in our home when we knew how sensitive and logical Luca was. I totally understand where the fear of Santa Claus comes from. He rationalizes and overthinks everything. If you really think about Santa, he really is scary. I don’t want anyone coming into my house when I’m sleeping, no matter who it is! And especially not down the chimney. That’s just creepy. It doesn’t make sense, and it’s creepy. So for a child who reasons like a grown-up, I can only imagine what was going on in his head.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - Music for the soul - But then one day, while he was playing his electric piano, he quickly walked over to me and said: “Hug me, mommy!” He sat in my lap and held on to me. At first, I didn’t understand what was going on. It took me a while to realize that there was a specific song that the piano played, a slow mellow tune, that made him feel the need to run to me every time for a hug! The song made him sad, and I could understand why. It really was a sad tune. And since then I’ve noticed that whenever he hears a song that might be a little melancholy, he will either run away, ask me to turn it off or come to me for comfort.</image:title>

We don’t sweat it anymore because he’s a happy, healthy, smart little boy, and we’ve never seen or heard of a teenager who still wears diapers. So it’ll just have to happen when it happens. <image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - Sharing is caring… Or is it? - After that sad incident, I opened my eyes and what I saw amazed and surprised me. Now I often see Luca happily handing over his toys to his friends in class. I watch him welcome kids into his room as they bring down all his toys onto the floor. I watch him share the treats he loves with anyone who happens to be there with him. My child not only shares, but he enjoys it. He enjoys sharing not only his things, but more importantly the joys he gets from his toys, books or food, which just amazes me! And it just makes me angry that because Luca was smart enough to be selective about whom he shared his things with, I unfairly concluded that he was a hopeless case. Bad. Very bad.</image:title>

<image:title>Sensitive and Extraordinary - Is your child highly sensitive? - I remember having read a comment by a mom who said that the book helped her deal with her daughter who just hated birthday parties. Seconds later I purchased the Kindle version of the book. You can also find an online test to see whether you or your child are highly sensitive. What’s especially nice is that the other offers tailored advice to parents who are both highly sensitive, to families where only one parent is highly sensitive, and to those who have other kids who are not highly sensitive.</image:title>
<image:caption>Hope this helps you as much as it helped us!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Books - Zips and Eeloo Make a Friend</image:title>
<image:caption>Zips and Eeloo are two aliens from planet Zooglebeep (NOT Zoogleboop, that is a very different planet) who think they know everything about being human. But do they know how to make a friend? Find out in this colorful and funny graphic novel that early readers will want to read again and again! Zips and Eeloo are two aliens who have read a bunch of books about humans and watched a LOT of human TV. You could DEFINITELY say they are experts at all things human. They even have EXPERTS IN ALL THINGS HUMAN CERTIFICATES! And in all of the stories, Zips and Eeloo have learned that humans love friends, so now they are going to make a friend, too. But "making friends" is harder than it seems ... nowhere in any of the books have Zips and Eeloo learned how to make one, so they're going to try with milk jugs, tennis balls, and anything else they can find. This full-color graphic novel with a Dyslexia-friendly font is aimed at the earliest readers just beginning on their graphic novel journeys. Author Leila Boukarim expertly weaves in humor with socio-emotional themes, and illustrator Alex Lopez brings the characters to life. Zips and Eeelo Make a Friend's funny and adorable text will keep readers engaged while teaching an important lesson—friendship! "These hilarious and lovable aliens have only been on Earth for six days but they navigate being human like experts… in chaos. And I adored every second!" - Tara J. Hannon, author of Birtle and the Purple Turtles “Simple yet energetic dialogue by Boukarim (Hello Goodbye Little Island) combines with deliciously bright artwork from Lopez (LankyBox: Epic Adventure!), making the events of this goofy early reader graphic novel offering practically bounce off the page. It’s a warm and madcap meditation on teamwork, patience, and new experiences told through a comestible escapade starring cartoonish pseudo-siblings finding common ground in their love for chickpea paste.” - Publisher's Weekly for Zips and Eeloo Make Hummus "Lopez's expressive, witty artwork is full of comedic, slapstick energy and really complements the characters and the overall story. In addition to the playful, inviting story, Zips and Eeloo actually follow some good directions, and a recipe at the end will give kids a chance to try it on their own. Delicious fun." - Booklist for Zips and Eeloo Make Hummus "A mix of simple comedic ingredients with a few twists as garnish makes for a funny, fast read.” - Kirkus Reviews for Zips and Eeloo Make Hummus</image:caption>
